The main resource provided by the NECAM Group is preparation for the Advanced Driver Examination provided by IAM RoadSmart.
Our Advanced Driver course will give you additional on-road knowledge and skills, above and beyond what is taught when you learn to drive. All you need is a valid licence and your own car.
A skilled driver has the advantage of being able to get more enjoyment out of driving, with confidence and safety. Members of the NECAM Group enjoy social interaction and friendships.
What does a skilled driver gain? Happier passengers, better control of your vehicle with enhanced observation and planning skills, lower costs due to fuel efficiency, less wear and tear on your vehicle and possibly lower car insurance. (Many insurance Companies ask if you are an advanced driver).
We take pride in assisting Associates to achieve, as a minimum, a Pass in the examination. You’ll be paired with one of our highly skilled Observers, who hold an additional Institute of the Motor Industry qualification and who have themselves passed the Advanced Driving Examination.
Our Associate Co-ordinator will contact you once we have been notified that you have joined IAM RoadSmart as an Associate, but he/she may be contacted anytime if you would like more information. You will be assigned a local voluntary Observer, who will contact you and arrange to meet you in a location that is convenient for you both.
The first meeting will often involve a demonstration drive to show the standard and some elements of advanced driving. You will be offered a series of observed drives, preferably at regular intervals and work together on developing your on-road skills. You’ll learn how to continually apply the ‘IPSGA’ framework (Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration) to a variety of on-road situations including bends, motorways, and during overtakes.
You will be sent a handbook to help you keep track of your progress, and you’ll have time to practise and hone your new skills between each session with the Observer.
You can even take advantage of the friendly NECAM Group who have a regular social diary. You can meet up with others at coffee mornings and evening meals (link).
When you’re ready, your Observer will put you forward for your Advanced Test with one of our Examiners. Upon completion, you’ll gain ‘Advanced Driver’ and ‘IAM RoadSmart Member’ status.
What’s included in the course fee?
Membership of NECAM for the first year.
Typically around 6-12 sessions with an Observer (but this is flexible!)
The Advanced Test
One year’s Associate membership with IAM RoadSmart
We encourage continued membership of NECAM and IAM RoadSmart after passing the exam, as there can be so much more to enjoy!
What should you do now? Join IAM RoadSmart as an Associate!
Providing you live in our catchment area (or it would be more convenient for you), please specify your preference of NECAM as your local group on your application. Thanks!
