We formed in 2014 by the amalgamation of Sunderland, Durham and Hartlepool Advanced Motoring groups. Each of the three individual groups goes back to the 1970’s so we benefit from a long legacy of advanced driving and look to continue it for many years to come.
In common with all other advanced driving groups and in line with the founding principles of IAM RoadSmart, our aim is to reduce the number of accidents, deaths and serious injuries on our roads by instilling much higher standards of driving than the standard driving test requires. All ages are welcome and virtually everyone can benefit from our skilled, independent observation and coaching. Training is carried out by Observers: NECAM volunteers who are qualified to IAM RoadSmart National standards. They use the IAM RoadSmart course to prepare candidates for the Advanced Driving Test (ADT). Further training towards the IAM Masters qualification is also available.
At NECAM, we come from all walks of life and from many different backgrounds. We pride ourselves on our friendly, approachable atmosphere. Our group has a thriving events calendar which includes talks, lectures, coffee mornings, social meals and even weekend breaks. Our monthly group meetings include talks on many different topics – not just driving – and offer a central point for members to enjoy the friendship and support of like-minded people for whom advanced driving is a shared passion.
Normally, NECAM membership begins as an Associate Member of IAM RoadSmart when you will be allocated an Observer who will give you one-to-one tuition in preparation for the ADT. Almost all ADT examiners hold a Police Advanced Driving Certificate, but all will have been trained formally to ensure that the IAM RoadSmart standard is maintained nationally.
We also welcome the transfer of members from other IAM RoadSmart groups who may have moved geographically, and we are pleased to have links through our membership to other groups of advanced road users such as Durham Advanced Motorcyclists and Northumbria Blood Bikes.
Whatever your background or level of driving experience, we are here to help you achieve a valuable qualification confirming your driving skills and safety. This in turn will increase your driving confidence and enjoyment and we hope you’ll give the experience a try. For more information, please visit our contact page.
